| Guitars In Orbit, Los Twang! Marvels El Toro Records ETCD 5090
Here I have a CD by Los Twang! Marvels, a German instrumental guitar band in the fine tradition as laid down in the late fifties and early 60's by surf bands like The Vikings, The Surfari's, The Sentinals, The Blue Stingrays, The Chantay's and last but not least the King of Surf: Dick Dale. Mostly this energizing music is referred to as instrumental surf, but there's a lot of substreams present, merging with almost any known music genre. Personally my heart starts beating a lot faster when listening to the Finnish type of surf, also known as Rautalanka, or the Latino influenced surfer melodies. Well, this record hits my softspot immediatly because it has strong elements out of both, and much more. There's 14 fabulous tracks on this one, most songs are written by Alex Anthony Faide, who also plays the lead guitar on the songs. This disc starts with "Gipsy Queen Witch", a grim song in a minor key, lots of echo on the Fender Jazzmaster and a great theme. "Luna Park" is the second track and continues this wild guitar ride with exciting melody lines, breaks and accents. This goes on and on, every track a pearl, every note laid down where it should, played in tight ensemble and every songs in a perfect balance. The overall sound of the recording hits me with authenticity, it's surf the way it should be played, in the fifties, the sixties and every decade yet to come. Los Twang! Marvels also recorded a few covers of well-known songs, "Brasil" being one of them and certainly not the easiest song to give a makeover. Listen to this rendition, if you're a guitarfreak you will love it! Tracklisting: Los Twang! Marvels are: Contact information: info@twang-marvels.de Reviewed by Uncle_B, 2007 |
